Get Your Motor Running

As a student in high school, having the opportunity to attend an international trade event is a chance of a lifetime, especially when you are passionate about the product.  A group of Crestview High School students who are members of the Automotive Club and their instructor, David Welch, had this opportunity by attending the SEMA Show last November for the second year in a row.

The SEMA Show is the premier automotive speciality products trade event in the world.  It draws the industry’s brightest minds and hottest products to one place—the Las Vegas Convention Center.  In addition, the SEMA Show provides attendees with educational seminars, product demonstrations, special events, networking opportunities and more.

David Welch and his Automotive Club were just a few individuals out of the more than 70,000 people who attended the show this year.  Mr. Welch and his students had the opportunity to preview over 3,000 newly introduced products, visit more than 2,400 exhibits, see 1,500 of the coolest vehicles on the planet parade through the Las Vegas Convention Center, and meet celebrities from the automotive industry.

Senior Nyssa Soles said, "SEMA was an amazing way to show what Crestview's Automotive Club can and will bring to the table.  It was a way to show the progress that we've accomplished.  My favorite thing was when some of the seniors sat at the hotel and really got to talk about what we all plan to do after school and how being in automotive really changed our life and how Mr. Welch has impacted us."

Giving students the chance to see the wide variety of automotive careers opportunities was a key factor as to why Automotive Instructor, David Welch, took his students to the SEMA Show.  “This show gave my students the opportunity to see the value of what I teach them every day in the classroom, from the automotive technician training to professionalism, and how it can be applied to their career.  My students experienced first hand how critical it is to learn all aspects of the automotive field,” says Mr. Welch.

The students and the instructor held fundraisers throughout the year, from car washes to business donations, to raise money to attend the show.  Mr. Welch looks forward to continue providing this learning experience to his advanced automotive students in the future and is always interested in partnerships with his program.
